Rochester and Strood Conservative councillors were present at the opening of the newly-refurbished Strood Sports Centre on Thursday, 14 July. The event was in the presence of special guest of honour Sir Geoff Hurst, 1966 World Cup Winner.
Medway was firm in its commitment to deliver a tangible, lasting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Four years on, investment in that sporting legacy remains a major priority for the Council, as demonstrated by its new Medway Sporting Legacy strategy, which was also launched on the same day.

Medway’s Sporting Legacy 2017 – 2020 sets out how the Council will continue to use sport as a catalyst for good – encouraging active and healthy lifestyles, maintaining the quality of and evolving sports delivery and facilities, supporting and inspiring local talent and cementing Medway’s reputation as a centre of excellence for sport.
Sir Geoff attended a 1966 style football tournament with 16 local primary schools representing the 16 nations from the 1966 World Cup. After presenting the winning nation with a Jules Rimet replica, Sir Geoff officially opened the newly-refurbished centre. The refurbished facility now offers excellent gym facilities to local residents to accompany the traditional swimming and outdoor sport offers.
